Castle Bottom Lookers

Castle Bottom Lookers

Sunday 27 May 2012

Another scorching hot day, saw the cows all wandering between shady patches to stay cool. All looked healthy and happily grazing. Also met our lovely new resident ponies, the grazier must have brought them onto site when he took away Jack and Jill on Friday. It's not til you see them both close up that you realise how much the names Little and Large really suit! Both seemed very friendly and happy to walk alongside me as I walked the site. For those of you that haven't met them yet, here they are grazing in the sunshine:

Sunday 27 May. We went to Castle Bottom late this afternoon with our son and his girlfriend and our dog and as we walked down the ponies were in view and they then joined us at the stream. Both friendly and calm, happy to be stroked, with ears well forward. Spent a little time with them and then left with Large following us up the hill towards Blackbushe for a while.Didn't look for cows, seeing ponies was a bonus :)

Another hot morning. Today we were successful and saw all the cattle and ponies. Nine of the cattle were lazing in the shade of the tress in area 11 near the cottage ruins. They all looked well and the little one seemed fine when moving around (not troubled by any injury to his leg). The bull was fine, enjoying some peace and quiet away from the rest, he was grazing in area 4, just to the left of the steps going down to the stream. The ponies were busy grazing in area 8.

  3. Walking the dog tonight, Little & Large were waiting at the Blackbushe gate. Both very friendly and calm. We noticed that Large has a tick on his neck.

We decided we would do our cow+pony lookering earlier today!A good decision, as we found all cattle and both ponies, together lazing and grazing in area 9. We were able to stroke both Little and Large and they both seem fine, except for the usual flies that horses and ponies attract in the Summer! The cows were not showing any signs of any problems and stayed together (except for 1 adult who was a few yards from the rest)and we were glad to see no bullying!Salt licks seem to have been finished, will they be replaced? Otherwise all fences intact, stream getting dry again and everything growing really well!!

  6. Saw the two new ponies for the first time along with the bull and the little calve in the marshes. Found six cows in the last place I looked bang smack in the middle of the reserve. Took a while and still couldn't find them all.

Found 8 cows and young ones inbetween areas 13/15. All looked well, the little ones are definitely coming on a treat. The 2 ponies were in the same area. Walked around the site, down to the stream and back, but did not find the bull and his 'current girlfriend'!
