Castle Bottom Lookers

All Present and Correct!

The livestock were checked today and thankfully, all the animals were located....even the elusive calf! They all seem to be doing well grazing near to the corral. They followed me for a short time "mooing" gently before leaving me. I met some of our Lookers on-site, which was very reassuring, to know the animals are being checked regularly. You do tend to get quite attached to them over the months. Our bull decided to have a nice scratch on one of our signs, so no doubt this will need replacing at some point. They seem to find the new signs irresistible! I got a nice shot of some of the herd, so here they are....

Saturday 13:00 - 15:00 The main herd were up near the corral grazing on the hay that had been put out for them. They seemed happy and in good condition. Sooty or Sweep - we don't know which one - was lying down but soon decided to get up when we approached. However, the calf that disappears remains elusive and we couldn't find him/her in spite of a 2 hour search. Houdini is definitely a good name for this one! If this is going to be a regular thing with it, perhaps the rangers / farmer would consider attaching a cow bell? Otherwise we are only going to have irregular sightings which makes it more likely something could be missed.
Jack and Jill are always there and Jill seems to be more sociable now. Jack the Lad is very confident around both the cattle and humans and we took some good photos.

Finally, we noted that like many places suffering from drought, it is very dry on the reserve. Would it be possible to put a few fire beaters at each of the five gates as a precaution?

  3. Hello All. Sorry I have not reported back on Friday but I forgot. We did do our watching on Friday and 9 of the cattle were there to great us at the gate as we entered from Coopers hill. We stood and watched them for a while and all looked well so we then move on to try and find the missing little fluffy one and the ponies. We finaly came across the ponies grazing up on the hill on our way back round but unfortunatly was unsuccessfull in finding the little one. Hope you all have a good Easter and I will try to remember to report back straight away next Friday. Diane.

  5. Got to castle bottom at 17:00 and left 18:30, zig zagged across the site three times with my dad (telling my dad we would definitely see them ) I saw two adults in the marsh by the brook and that was it! Really frustrating and feel like my must have walked past them. Hopefully they will all be found tomorrow. Sorry I guess?. James
