Castle Bottom Lookers

Castle Bottom Lookers

Tuesday 25 September 2012

After three hours and miles of trudging through the mire I eventually found the highlands in a pine, heather and birch munching loose roaming band.  I was perturbed as I had still not seen the big fellow, and he had not been seen by us for a few days, but from the top of a hill I spied him well away from his ladies and kids down in the thick bog myrtle where he could get a little peace from them.  I’m off home now with mud up to my knees, I did get stuck for a bit and thought id have to phone for help for a minute so watch it out there and don’t get bogged down by it all :->
The ponies were in the central grassy area grazing.

Found 8 of the cattle, including the youngest and the bull, in approximately area 14, on the edge of the mire. Could not find the other 3, but the horses were in area 13. All the animals that we saw looked fine.
PS we posted this blog yesterday (early afternoon), it must have got lost in the 'ether'!

  3. Managed to see all the cattle and ponies today -it has been getting harder as autumn colours have started to hide the cows and they are spreading out a lot more these days but today they were kind and were all lined up in area 13. They all seem well and still finding plenty of food to munch on!

Hi sorry forgot to post on Friday but we managed to dodge the rain and go out to look for the cattle. Found 7 of them in the area near the correl where we often see them. Even thou we could not see all of them we did sense that they were there as we could hear and see movement in the undergrowth. We did not get to find the ponies. I am sorry but we won't be able to look for them this Friday coming but if it is ok we will be up there either Thurday or Saturday.

Found all the cattle in area 8, they looked fine. Horses were nearby, behind the trees in area 7. During our walk in the reserve a police helicopter was circling and hovering over head, hope we did no look too suspicious!

We eventually found all 11 cattle and the 2 ponies. First we found 6 in area 13, 4 cows and 2 dark brown little ones. The 2 ponies were grazing in area 8. We made our way down to the river but there were none to be seen. Walking back from the river we saw one cow and her little brown calf walking through area 7, have no idea where they came from! Then returning on the track to the Coopers Hill entrance we found the bull and the other missing cattle in area 9 (maybe they had been in the mire). All the animals looked fine. The weather was lovely for a good walk and we noticed that the fungi are at last making an appearance.

  9. 9th of October

Saw all cattle to the left of the Coopers Hill entrance, somewhere iv never seen them before. If you cant find them, chances are they'll be there, really well hidden! Couldnt find the two ponies. All was well.

Found the horses and 10 of the cattle in the area at the top of the stairs. The horses were enjoying eatting the grass and looked well. Most of the cattle were lying down and a few were busy eating the branches that have been taken down. The only one we couldn't find was Houdini but all the rest looked well.

Sunday 14th October Hi well after having 2 weeks away from cow lookering we were hoping to see all animals today! Unable to look yesterday due to time + weather. Found total 6 cows (the bull, Smudge,1 cow and three youngsters)all fairly close to each other towards the Coopers Hill entrance and the mire. After an extensive search and asking other people who were up there we still could not locate the famous 5.Sorry. Spotted the ponies across the valley as we walked back and called them. They happily came, had a good stroke and then followed us right up to the Blackbushe gate!So some success on a really sunny Sunday!

All the cattle were grazing/lazing in area 13. They all looked fine and dry even after all the rain. The horses were standing quietly nearby, they too looked fine.
